The marine industry carries out large and complex projects, and the demand for skilled professionals spans almost the entire field of technology industries. The sector needs experts from all levels of education and with a wide range of educational backgrounds. In addition to naval architects and Masters of Science in Engineering, companies in the industry are looking for professionals in project management, electrical and automation engineering, information technology and artificial intelligence, environmental sciences, finance, law, communications, and design. A key competence is the ability to understand the big picture.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In production, diverse industrial skills are also needed \u2014 for example, in metalwork, electrical work, HVAC, and automation. Educational opportunities range from vocational education and training to doctoral studies. It is also possible to enter the industry through retraining or continuing education. Many companies in the field offer their own training options as well.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Professionals in the marine industry have extensive career opportunities both in Finland and abroad. Employers include shipyards, design offices, system and equipment manufacturers, software companies, as well as classification societies and research institutes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In Finland, Marine Technology is taught at Aalto University and Turku University of Applied Sciences. Related subjects are also covered in institutions offering seafaring education. Most programmes are open to applicants who have completed upper secondary education. The exact content of the studies and application periods vary by institution and programme.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Aalto University: Master Program in Maritime Engineering<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The Nordic Master in Maritime Engineering is based on the expertise of the participating universities within naval architecture, offshore engineering and maritime engineering.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Aalto University\u2019s study track in the programme focuses on passenger ships. This study track gives a comprehensive overview of the different aspects related to the design, analysis and optimisation of passenger ships. Studies cover both basic knowledge as well as the application of risk-assessment methods in ship design.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The aim of the studies is to work on a single ship project throughout the specialisation semester and work on different parts of this ship within different courses.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Graduates of the passenger ship study track are ideal recruits for shipyard design departments, design offices, classification societies, etc.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
