This results in unfair\u00a0competition that diminishes Europe&#8217;s competitiveness and harms its maritime industrial\u00a0capacity.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Strategic dependence:\u00a0<\/strong>Europe&#8217;s maritime resilience is at risk as it relies on Asia for 94%\u00a0of merchant ships and 96% of containers.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>In this context, Mario Draghi advocates for&nbsp;<strong>targeted support<\/strong>, such as \u201cconditionalities in EU&nbsp;financial instruments or tax incentives for shipowners to buy ships made in EU\u201d. Such&nbsp;proposals are entirely in line with the recommendations from SEA Europe\u2019s manifesto,&nbsp;presented last April.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In its manifesto, SEA Europe also called for the EU to quickly implement a&nbsp;<strong>Maritime&nbsp;Industrial Strategy<\/strong>. This request was echoed by the Competitiveness Council in May, where&nbsp;EU Member States called on the European Commission \u201cto develop a new strategy that&nbsp;supports the European maritime industry, which is vital for the EU\u2019s strategic interests, in the<br>digital and green transition and that encompasses all the dimensions of the sector\u2019s&nbsp;competitiveness\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cEU policymakers must act now to strengthen the competitiveness of Europe&#8217;s shipyards and&nbsp;maritime equipment manufacturers.
