Aker Arctic Technology Inc has been awarded a contract by TKMS GmbH (TKMS) to design and deliver the centreline propeller and shaftline for the new Polar Research Vessel, commissioned by the Alfred Wegener Institute, Helmholtz Centre for Polar and Marine Research(AWI).<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The new Polarstern, a state-of-the-art Polar Class 2 (PC 2) diesel-electric icebreaker, will enable AWI to conduct year-round scientific research in the Arctic and Antarctic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Aker Arctic\u2019s scope includes the delivery of a 10.5 MW centreline shaftline system featuring a five-bladed fixed-pitch stainless steel propeller with a diameter of 5.4 metres.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This delivery reinforces Aker Arctic\u2019s position as a global leader in high-performance ice-class propulsion systems. The company\u2019s track record includes PC 3-rated propellers for Arctic module carriers, ice-strengthened bronze propellers for 1A-class ASD tugs, and full shaftline systems for the Finnish Navy\u2019s new corvettes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In addition to the Polarstern project, Aker Arctic is also engaged in two other Polar Class 2 (PC 2) propulsion projects for undisclosed customers. One involves the delivery of a PC 2-ice classed propeller, while the other includes both a PC 2-ice classed propeller and shaftline system for advanced Polar icebreakers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
