Widespread strikes and overtime ban in the technology industry
The Industrial Union and Trade Union Pro have announced a six-day strike affecting the technology industry in dozens of locations. Overtime and shift changes are also banned throughout the sector.
The Industrial Union has declared a strike at 46 locations, while Pro has announced a strike at 21 location, all involving member companies of Technology Industries of Finland. The strikes will take place from January 27 to February 1, 2025, impacting over 10,000 workers.
The Industrial Union’s strike will cover all shifts starting between Monday, January 27 at 00.00 and Saturday, February 1 at 23.59. Pro’s strike will conclude earlier, on February 1, at 17:59.
Additionally, both unions have imposed a ban on overtime and shift changes in the technology industry, effective from today, Monday, January 13 at 00.00. The Industrial Union’s overtime ban will remain in effect until Sunday, March 2 at 24.00, while Pro’s overtime and additional work bans will end on Friday, February 28.
Pro has also implemented restrictions across the entire technology industry sector, including a ban on accumulating flex-time balances, a prohibition on changing shifts, and a restriction on leisure travel for business purposes.
Beyond the technology industry, the Industrial Union’s ban on overtime and shift changes extend to the basic chemical industry, plastics products industry, chemical products industry, and the oil, natural gas and petrochemical industries. However, the ban does not apply to emergency work or tasks necessary to safeguard life and health.
Negotiations for a new collective agreement between the Technology Industries of Finland and the Industrial Union began on September 12, 2024. However, talks ended without resolution on January 9, and no further negotiating dates have been set. The National Conciliator will mediate the dispute next time on Wednesday, January 15.
The views of the parties on wage increases differ significantly. In November, the SAK (The Central Organisation of Finnish Trade Unions) unions announced that they would demand a 10 percent pay increase for two years, including a 6 percent rise in the first year.
On January 9, Technology Industries of Finland proposed an agreement aimed at improving the purchasing power of wage earners during the contract period. Since the negotiations began in September, the employer’s objective has been to achieve a responsible and balanced agreement that safeguards Finnish jobs and employees’ purchasing power.
