Order intake remains stable in the second quarter

In 2024, the turnover of mechanical engineering companies (machinery, metal products and vehicles) in Finland decreased by just under one per cent on 2023. In 2024, their turnover in Finland amounted to EUR 39 billion.

In the January–July period of 2025, the turnover of mechanical engineering companies was down by two per cent year-on-year.

In the July–September period, the value of new orders in mechanical engineering was down by one per cent on the preceding quarter. Year-on-year, the value of new orders increased by 20 per cent. The 2024 comparison period was exceptionally weak, which explains the high growth percentage.

At the end of September, the value of order books was three per cent higher than at the end of June and 26 per cent higher than in September 2024. It should be noted that shipyards have an exceptionally large share of the total value of order books. The order books of defence companies have also seen considerable growth. High-value projects scheduled over a lengthy period increase the value of order books in the industry over the long term.

On the basis of order trends in the first half of the year, the turnover of mechanical engineering companies is expected to grow in 2025.

The number of personnel employed by mechanical engineering companies in Finland at the end of June was 0.8 per cent higher than at the end of March. The industry employed approximately 137,600 people in June.
