We are currently seeing reports from around the world of large corporations rolling back their efforts in promoting diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI). Fortunately, the direction in Finland is different—and that is a good thing. A fair and inclusive working life strengthens our ability to prepare for global upheavals.

It is in the interests of both Finnish society and companies that as many people as possible find their place in working life.

Finland’s demographic dependency ratio has deteriorated sharply. It is in the interests of both society and businesses that as many people as possible are engaged in working life; otherwise, our economic growth and the sustainability of the public sector are at risk. Domestic talent alone is not sufficient—we also need labour-based immigration.

Attracting international talent and, in particular, the ability to retain employees and students already here are absolutely essential components of Finland’s long-term risk management and competitiveness.

An inclusive working life means that all employees feel they are treated equally and have the opportunity to progress in their careers without discrimination. Promoting equality is not only a statutory obligation for companies but also makes good business sense. Companies that invest in an inclusive work culture benefit from more committed staff, lower employee turnover, and improved wellbeing at work.

At its core, DEI work is about building a fair working life, which aligns well with Finnish values.

For companies, diversity ultimately translates into greater resilience. When a workplace includes a broad range of expertise, diverse perspectives, and cultural understanding, businesses are better equipped to manage crises, identify new business opportunities, and develop more sustainable solutions.
