Leading competence in Finnish combustion engine development

Today’s combustion engines and related solutions are innovative, efficient and environmentally saving high-tech products. The manufacture and design of combustion engines and the training in the industry in Finland are world class.

Automation, robotics and continuous R&D all play a key role in the manufacturing process for modern combustion engines. Product quality and safety are key factors.

Design and ergonomics are becoming ever more important. Finland has a strong and competitive manufacturing network in the combustion engine industry. Seamless collaboration and research projects involving all stakeholders, component manufactures, research institutions and universities are vital in the long term development of new, sustainable engine technologies and integrated solution.

Finland’s Arctic expertise in the industry is of a very high standard. In Arctic conditions products must have exceptional reliability, efficiency, safety and eco-friendliness.

Combustion engine emissions have been reduced through continues research and development work. As well as nearly zero emissions, customers benefit from energy efficiency and lower fuel costs.

Various different fuels are used in modern combustion engines today. Liquefied natural gas and biofuels are used ever more widely as low-carbon fuels. Newest Finnish reference is the first LNG driven icebreaker Polaris with Wärtsilä engines.

Maintenance and servicing of combustion engines contribute towards the move to a circular economy. Lifecycle approaches, anticipatory maintenance, global availability and remote control all enhance eco-friendliness and customer satisfaction.
